Frustration on Capitol Hill reached a fever pitch as the House scrambled to pass a handful of critical funding bills in the final days before Congress’s annual August recess. Democrats, for their part, have dispensed with diplomacy in negotiating with Republicans who appear more focused on culture-war crusades and doing Donald Trump’s bidding than anything resembling actual governance. “[Republicans] have been extreme since the beginning of this Congress; they continue to become more and more extreme,” Democrat Suzan DelBene told Vanity Fair this week. “They’re on a fast track to a shutdown.”
…Democrat DelBene isn’t holding her breath for her Republican colleagues to show some profiles in courage. “I think we’ve all heard some Republicans—and you’ve even seen it in the press—say, ‘Oh, this is terrible.’ But the reality is there aren’t any moderate Republicans,” DelBene, who sits on the Ways and Means Committee, said in an interview. “There’s lots of talk, but I think when it comes down to action, they all vote extreme.”
