The election of Rep. Mike Johnson (R-La.) as speaker on Wednesday ended more than three weeks of Republican infighting following the ouster of Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) from the speakership — but it immediately raised new questions about whether Johnson would help or hinder Republicans’ efforts to hold onto their fragile majority next year.
“They have a speaker who’s very extreme,” Rep. Suzan DelBene (D-Wash.), the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee’s chairwoman, told us Wednesday. “I guess it’s not surprising given where the Republican caucus is, but people want to see us govern, and we need folks who are willing to work in a bipartisan way.”
